Pippins Steal One

The Yakima Valley Pippins scored twice in the top of the ninth to hand the Falcons a 9-7 loss in a back and forth game on Sunday at Elks Stadium.

The Falcons scored twice in the first two innings.  Scotland Church doubled home Josh Croft in the first then Ryan Degner brought home Trey Kamachi with a two out single in the second inning.

After getting on the board with a run in the third off starter Austin Lambright, the Pippins scored three times in the top of the fifth to take their first lead of the game. The lead however didn’t last long as the Falcons tied it in the bottom of the inning scoring on an error and a Brandon Grimsley RBI single.

In the sixth the Pippins retook to the lead with a pair of runs off reliever Matt Moriarty.

The Falcons offense responded in the seventh scoring three times to retake the lead 7-6.   Kamachi and Nick Minteer collected RBI singles while Jerod Smith scored on a wild pitch.

However the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead as Joel Lamont gave up a run in the eighth inning and a pair in the ninth to secure the win for the visitors.  The Falcons put runners at second and third with two out in their final at bat, but couldn’t score.

Church led the offense finishing 4-4 with two RBIs.  Kamachi and Grimsley each had a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Lamont was hit with the loss.

In the final two games of the series the Falcons and Pippins combined for 37 runs and 46 hits.

The Falcons (14-28) will host the Kitsap Bluejackets (18-23) beginning on Tuesday in a three game series at Elks Stadium.
