Shootout At Elks

Fans saw an offensive display on Thursday night as the Bellingham Bells slipped by the Falcons 16-11 with a combined 27 runs and 29 hits.

After the Bells scored three runs in the top of the first, the Falcons answered in the bottom of the inning with a Nick Minteer three-run homerun to tie the game.

The Bells, the top offense in the West Coast League, scored single runs in the third and fourth before exploding for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth the Falcons scored three times capped by a two-out, two-run single from Will Fox cutting the Bells lead in half.

Then in the eighth the teams combined to score nine runs.  First the Bells went to work scoring four times off reliever Lincoln Herendeen in the top of the inning.

In the bottom half the Falcons answered with five runs on four hits.  Colton Waltner knocked in Scotland Church with an RBI double.  Two batters later he scored on Tommy Lane’s ground out.  Will Fox scored on Tyler Brown’s RBI single, then plated on Brandon Grimsley’s two out single.  That’s as close as the Falcons would come.

Aaron Mason started for the Falcons and lasted five innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and struck out three.  He loses his first game of the summer.

Fox finished with three hits and two RBIs, Minteer had three RBIs, while Grimley scored three times.

The Falcons and Bells will play game two of the series on Friday night at 6:35pm, Matt Moriarty gets the start.
