In The Win Column

Saturday night, delight as the Kelowna Falcons record their first win of 2015 with a 5-2 victory in Victoria.

The Falcons jumped on the Habourcats early with a pair of runs in their first at bats.  Following two lead off walks and a wild pitch, Ben Gamba smacked a two run single to right to give the Falcons their first lead of the summer.  Gamba has three RBIs in his first two games.

After the Harbourcats cut the lead in half in the second, Falcons starter Tyler Gillies from London Ontario settled in, throwing six strong innings striking out five and recorded the victory.

The offence scored a single runs in each the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.  In the sixth, returning player Brandon Grimsley singled to drive in Josh Egan for his first RBI of the season, in what would turn out to be the winning run.   In the seventh, Hunter Villanueva greeted a new Harbourcats pitcher with a solo homer to lead off the inning.  Then in the eighth Villanueva singled and drove in Vinny Esposito for his second RBI of the game.

In the bottom of the ninth Port Coquitlam’s Curtis Taylor struck out the side, tallying his first save of the summer.

In the win the Falcons outhit the Cats 9-6; Villanueva collecting three of them.  Clean-up man Justin Flores collected a pair of hits in five at bats.

The Falcons and Harbourcats will play in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm.  Elias Bedolla heads to the hill for the visitors.  The Falcons will host Yakima on Tuesday night in the FREE home opener at Elks Stadium presented by TELUS and Cisco, first pitch at 6:35pm.
