The Kelowna Falcons dropped the opener of a 3-game set with the Wenatchee AppleSox by a 6-4 score on Tuesday night at Elks Stadium.
Four Kelowna errors lead to 3 runs for Wenatchee early, and a late comeback attempt fell short.
Wenatchee would score the 1st run of the ballgame in the top half of inning 1 as an error and wild pitch put a runner on 3rd with 2 out. An infield single from Mitchell Holland scored the run, and he moved to 2nd on another Kelowna error.
The Falcons responded in the bottom half, scoring once on a Sacrifice Fly from Justin Flores to score Grant Meylan.
Wenatchee put 2 runs up in the 2nd inning off a Sac Fly from Jordan Rathbone in his WCL debut, and another run scored when Joey Jansen reached on an error.
Wenatchee added another in the 4th with a Rathbone RBI double, and scored two runs on five hits in the 5th off of Curtis Taylor.
Taylor worked 5 innings, gave up 10 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 5.
Flores hit a 2-run homerun in the 6th to make it 6-3. With the bomb, Flores ties the single-season record for RBI’s as a Kelowna Falcon with 33, and moves into a tie for 2nd in Homeruns with 6.
Kelowna added another in the 8th inning but could not score as the game ended on a fly out to centerfield.
Matthew Kirk worked 4 innings of scoreless relief for the Falcons, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Dustin Hamilton got the save for the AppleSox after 3 innings and 3 hits with only 1 unearned run allowed.
With the loss, Kelowna’s record moves to 27-15, while Wenatchee moves to 20-23.
Kelowna will send Nat Hamby to the mound on Wednesday night at Elks Stadium, with hot dogs on sale for just $1 all night thanks to Maple Leaf Foods. First pitch is 6:35.
