Elks Crowned Champs

The Bend Elks used two big innings to propel themselves to their first WCL Championship, knocking off the Kelowna Falcons 10-4 on Monday night in Bend.

The Falcons scored a pair of runs early, getting 1 in the 1st on 3 straight hits including a Ben Gamba RBI single, and another in the 3rd when Gamba once again doubled down the line to score Grant Meylan.

In the 3rd, Kendall Motes would get into trouble on the mound for the Falcons, as the bases were loaded with 1 out on 3 singles. Billy King would change the scoreboard by hitting a 1-0 pitch over the board in right field to give Bend the 4-2 lead.

The onslaught continued in the 4th, just like it did on Saturday night, as the Elks put 6 runs across the plate. Curtis Taylor entered after the 1st run scored, and after a walk, gave up a pair of doubles to allow Bend to take a 10-2 lead.

Taylor would settle in, shutting down the Elks the rest of the way, going 4.2 innings, striking out 10 of the 20 batters he faced. He did not give up an earned run as an error in the 4th lead to the wild frame.

Kelowna scored a single run in the 5th and 7th, as Vinny Esposito and Brandon Oliver added RBI’s. The Falcons would strand 11 on base in the ball game.

Gamba finished the game 3-4 with 2 RBI’s, while Meylan, Matt Hearn, Kyle Plantier, and JJ Muno each had 2 hit nights.

The Elks celebrated their 1st championship on the field before the power would go out in the area, leaving both teams and 2500+ fans in the dark.

The Falcons finish the year with a total of 36 wins and 22 losses, setting a franchise mark in wins and winning their first ever WCL Playoff series.

The Kelowna Falcons would like to thank their Corporate Sponsors, Fans, Billets, Employees, and especially the players on a fantastic season. Stay tuned to the Falcons website over the next month for all the details on how you can be in the seats come June 2016.
