Cats Rout Falcons

Things didn’t go the Falcons’ way to start off their road trip Thursday night. The hosting Victoria HarbourCats, on the other hand, seemed to have all their stars align in their 9-1 rout of the Falcons.

The victory clinched a playoff spot for the first-place HarbourCats, who have now won a record setting 18 straight, the most ever in the WCL. That wasn’t the only impressive feat of the evening though, the win was played in front of a record-breaking crowd at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.

For the Falcons, the loss on Thursday ended the four-game winning streak they had been riding. It was a night where not much seemed to work. The entire team collected just 4 hits, two of which came from Michael Ciancio, who also scored the only run for his team, a solo home run over the left field fence in the seventh inning.

It took 5 pitchers to complete 9 innings for the Falcons, who gave up a collective 11 hits. Blake Rendazzo started the game, and pitched well enough, keeping his team in the game through 6 innings. He walked 2 and gave up 8 hits in his appearance, suffering his third loss on the season.

The game turned ugly in the seventh inning. Ciancio’s home run brought the Falcons within two, but the HarbourCats responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, tacking on 6 runs and effectively putting the game out of reach.

The Falcons will have a not one, but two shots at redemption on Friday, though. The two Canadian clubs will meet up for a Canada Day double-header, before playing the fourth and final game of the series on Sunday.
