Falcons Break Skid

The Kelowna Falcons broke their three game losing streak with an absolutely dominant game against the Corvallis Knights. The team finally woke up after being routed by the Knights 12-0 yesterday. A bounce back game was in the cards for the Falcons (6-4) who delivered a gusty performance as they defeated the Knights (5-6) by a score of 4-2.

Blake Rendazzo, the sophomore right-handed pitcher out Edmonds Community College, was absolutely fantastic, going pitching all the way into the ninth inning, falling just short of a complete game. Jared Morton, one of the four returning players on the Falcons, came in for the save in the bottom of the ninth and was able to preserve the win for the boys out of British Columbia.

The Falcons have seen just about everything this season. That included two walk off wins, an extra innings game and even a bench clearing brawl. One thing that had eluded the team however, was a home run. That all changed in the fifth inning when Daniel Nist hammered a monster shot out to left field.

The Falcons had a tie game going deep into the eighth inning before the bats came alive. JT Williams, Lane Lacrone and Brendt Citta all scored to give the Falcons some insurance runs. The Knights would only get one more before Morton ended the threat.

The Falcons now sit in second in the North Division with a 6-4 record. Coach Donohue was very happy that the team rebounded well after the first game of the series. He said, “The way Blake (Rendazzo) was pitching tonight was fantastic. Our success came by using a different approach at the plate. Guys were ready to hit right from the start, and we just let it rip.”

The runs that scored in the top of the eighth, which held up as the winning count, came as a result of the team being more aggressive at the plate. “I hope everyone paid attention to what was happening there. We have a chance to really barrel some balls this summer, and that all starts by getting up in the count and being aggressive.”

When asked about the rubber match between the teams, Coach Donohue was quick and confident with his reply, “We’ll get it. I think we’re going to get it. We got the monkey off our back. We bounced back after a 12-0 loss and played our best game of the summer. That was awesome to see.”

The Falcons will play the rubber match with the Knights and will then head out to Gresham for a three game set against the Wolves.
