Falcons Swept

The Gresham GreyWolves came into Friday’s game hungry for the road sweep against the Falcons. The visitors managed a 3-1 victory, and earned the sweep, but the Falcons did not make it easy.

Runs were few and far between for both clubs, with most of the offense coming in the early innings. The GreyWolves came out swinging, earning 2 runs in the first inning, and looking like they were primed to run away with it. Falcons pitching had other plans though, effectively shutting down their opponents until the ninth inning.

Starting pitcher Cameron Jack had a rough outing, going just 2 innings, walking 4, and giving up 2 hits and 2 earned runs.

The Falcons bullpen came in and picked it up for their teammate though. The long relievers Cody Ahlgrimm and Evan Jones combined for 6 1/3 innings pitched. Ahgrimm was perfect, throwing 3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits or walks. Jones tossed 3 1/3 innings, surrendering just 3 hits and a single earned run. Jared Morton closed out the final two batters of the night, not allowing any runs.

The offense on the other hand, couldn’t pick it up. The team combined for just 3 hits, and only mustered up one walk. Credit goes to GreyWolves’ starter David Wallum though, who pitched a complete game, only giving up 3 hits and a walk, plus the Falcons lone score of the game.

Brendt Citta was the main source of anything offensive from the Falcons. The catcher had 2 of the team’s 3 runs, including a deep double and a single that scored Daniel Nist in the second inning.

Falcons head coach Bryan Donohue didn’t mince words after seeing his team swept at home: “I expect more out of our club.” He knows that baseball is a game of short memory though, and he is already getting his team ready for the next series. They’re not happy right now. But you’ve got to take your lumps and do something about it.”

It clearly wasn’t a great series for the Falcons, but they’re looking forward and the whole club is buying into what coach Donohue is preaching: “There’s only one thing you can do with frustration in this game. Use it to make yourself better.”

The Falcons won’t have to wait long for a chance to turn it around. They go on the road Saturday for a three-game series against the Cowlitz Black Bears before continuing on to Kitsap to take on the Blue Jackets.
