Birds Come Up Short

Game two of the Falcons’ series against the Walla Walla Sweets was a polar opposite of their previous matchup. After winning a decisive 7-2 game on Friday, the Falcon came out rather flat in a 10-6 loss on Saturday.

The game was tight through three innings, with the Sweets holding onto a 3-0 lead going into the fourth. They added another run there, and carried their 4 run lead into the seventh, when the Falcons finally got on the board.

The small scores would stop there though, as the Sweets broke out for 6 runs in the eighth inning. Credit goes to the Falcons though, who didn’t roll over despite being down by a significant margin. In the bottom of the eighth, the home side smashed in six runs and cut the deficit down.

That would be all they could muster though, and a scoreless final frame put the Falcons to bed.

AJ Sawyer got his first ever start on the pitching mound on Saturday, and despite taking the loss, he had a respectable outing. The righty out of California Riverside pitched 4 innings, and gave up 6 hits and 4 earned runs, but he also worked out of a few jams and got some timely outs to keep his team in it.

Drew Martin-Cohn was the Falcons’ long relief man, going 3 1/3, while Fisher Dodd and O’Keefe Hall rounded out the final frames.

Thanks to their big eighth inning, the box score didn’t look overly lopsided, with the Falcons managing 9 hits off 7 different bats. Davis Todosichuk and Tevin Mitchell both had a pair of hits, and both scored a run for their club. Joey Crunkilton batted in 2 runs in his only plate appearance of the game.

The Falcons will close out the season on Sunday with the series finale against the Walla Walla Sweets. The club will be looking to finish on a high note and give their fans an entertaining farewell.

First pitch for that game is scheduled for 6:05 PM at Elks Stadium.
