Falcons Drop Game One to Bells

Heading into possibly the most important series of their summer, the Kelowna Falcons new they needed a win. Instead, the Bellingham Bells took a close one to the tune of 5-3.

The Falcons were riding high after smashing the Yakima Valley Pippins 9-2 the previous night. They went into Bellingham expecting a tough test, and that is exactly what they got.

The Bells came out flying, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Falcons answered back with one of their own in the top of the third. Chandler Robertson picked up the RBI.

Bellingham answered back very quickly. In the bottom of the third with no men on base, big Jake Veith came up to bat. The Home Rub derby champion hammered a pitch over the right field fence for a solo shot that made the game 4-1 in favour of the Bells.

Robertson’s great night continued in the seventh when he hit a double that also drove home some key runs for the Falcons. The Canadian finished with one hit and three RBI’s on the night.

The Falcons also saw some great work out of a couple new arms. Kade Mechels, the righty out of Western Oregon, came in to replace O’Keeffe Hall and was stellar, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up one hit and one run while striking out three.

Dakota Nelson, who is out of Southwestern Oregon Community College, also pitched a shutout inning for the Falcons. Bryan Donohue, the Falcons head coach, wanted to get a sense of what he had in his new additions. It’s a safe bet to say that both impressed him.

With the loss, the Falcons playoff push takes a hit. If they want to get back into the hunt, they will need to win the next two and take the series. Game two vs. Bellingham is slated to go at 7:05 pm.
