Falcons Fly High

The Falcons came out flying for game one of their series against the Walla Walla Sweets on Friday. The three-game set will be the final one of the season for both clubs, and each team is looking to cap off the summer on a high note.

Elks Stadium was packed on Friday to watch the Falcons drive in 7 on their way to a big 7-2 victory. After a rough road trip, the home win brought the birds’ season record to 25-27.

The pitching staff had a few new faces, and the fresh arms got a chance to show off their stuff. Kade Mechals got the nod on the mound for the series opener, tossing 6 innings of one-run ball on his way to the W. The righty gave up 5 hits and a pair of walks, striking out 5 in his first appearance in Kelowna.

Two other newer Falcons, David Tongue and Fisher Dodd each got some work, while regulars Riley Moore and Jared Morton closed out the final two frames.

The bats were the story of the night. The club got to double-digit hits on the night, recording 10 off the bats of 6 different players. Daniel Priwin, Brad Antchak, Max Carter, and Cameron Sterne all had a pair of hits in the outing.

Antchak handled the heavy lifting, batting in 3 runners and scoring 2 himself. Trailing by a single run in the fifth, the Falcons knotted up the game at one with a blistering shot over the left field wall by Antchak. His first home run of the year led off the inning, and got the club fired up.

After tying it up, the Falcons would put up two more in the next inning, before putting the game out of reach in the eighth with a 4-run performance.

Bench boss Bryan Donohue appreciated the offensive output in front of the home crowd. “It’s been a struggle to score runs. When we got runners on, guys got timely hits, it was good to see.”

After the tough result on the latest road trip, the failure to make the playoffs this year isn’t lost on Donohue, but he’s not ready to mail it, and neither is his team. “You know, we’re at home. We’ve got a chance to finish over .500.”

He says it’s the team’s goal to perform in front of the Falcons faithful and “finish the year playing the best baseball we’ve played all season.”

Game two of the series will go at 6:35 PM Saturday as the team looks to build on this performance and keep the hits coming.
