Falcons Rally for Win

The Kelowna Falcons (12-8) rallied in the top of the ninth to stun the Bend Elks (9-10) to even up the series. It was a game that lacked energy from both sides and the only real flurry of activity was in the top of the ninth when Kelowna rallied.

The Falcons opened up the scoring in the first inning when the Elks made a pair of errors on the same play. That brought home Matt Voelzke. The Elks were able to tie the game in the fourth off a wild pitch by the Falcons and then took the lead in the sixth off a passed ball.

The Falcons were lacking energy and watched the innings roll by. That was until the top of the ninth. With the Falcons needing to rally, they had three outs on the board to play with. Connor Gurnik lead off the inning with a booming double. Matt Bottcher than came off the bench and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved Gurnik over to third.

Lefty Alex McGarry then came to the plate and launched an RBI single into the outfield that brought home Gurnik to tie the game. Matt Scheffler came up to bat and hit a double of his own. That put runners on second and third for the Falcons.

With two outs on the board, Matt Voelzke smacked a single up the gut which scored McGarry and Scheffler. It was a 5-2 lead for the Falcons, who were suddenly on top and in a great position to win.

Kade Mechals, making his second start, closed out the bottom of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to secure himself a complete game and his second win of the season.

The Falcons will play the rubber match of the series tomorrow at 5:05 pm. It’s a travel day for the Falcons who will head home for a three-game set against the Cowlitz Black Bears.
