Kelowna Falcons

Sox Take Opener

The Kelowna Falcons sat through a pair of lightning delays as they fell to the Wenatchee AppleSox by a 6-2 score on Saturday night at Paul Thomas Senior Stadium.

The Falcons were first on the board in the ballgame as the starters Owen Leonard and Michael Spellancy had a strong night before a run crossed in the 3rd inning. Matt Voelzke doubled with two outs to the left center field gap with two outs and brought Tylor Nixon up to the plate where he bounced a ball past the third baseman Jacob Prater that scored Voelzke on an error for a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short lived, however, as the AppleSox tied the score on a bit of sloppiness from the Falcons on a pair of wild pitches that allowed the tying run to be 90-feet away befofre a Voelzke error cashed the run in and tied the game at 1-1.

From there, each of Leonard and Spellancy got into a groove and didn’t allow much to be scratched across whether it was in the way of a hit or a run until the 6th inning when the AppleSox collected their first hit of the game and would lead to a big inning.

John Sage got the inning started with a base hit straight up the middle while Prater followed that up with a walk to put a pair of baserunners on before Connor McCord drive home a run with an RBI single to give Wenatchee their first lead of the game which led to a Cory Meyer RBI single to push the lead to 3-1, which drew an end to the night of Owen Leonard.

Another two passed balls put the AppleSox in a good RBI position and they delivered with a sacrifice fly off the bat off Mason Marenco to give Wenatchee a 4-1 lead before the Falcons earned their second run of the ballgame.

Austen Butler came on the pinch hit and advanced to 3rd on a throwback to 1at base that went to to the right field fence and later scored on a passed ball to get the Falcons within three runs at 5-2 but the AppleSox had an answer in the way of scoring on a passed ball that brought Margo home before the two teams sat in a 26-minute rain/lightning delay and then another 30 minute delay before getting on to play the 9th frame, which the AppleSox sealed a 6-2 victory on Saturday.

Leonard was saddled with the loss while Spellacy picked up the win as the Falcons fell to 3-7 on the season. Kelowna and Wenatchee play the second of their three-game series on Sunday evening at 6:05 PM with the game being broadcasted live HERE with the Voice of the Falcons, Trevor Miller.
