Kelowna Falcons

Seventh Heaven

The Kelowna Falcons got a big five RBI night from Matt Voelzke and a quality start from Trevor Brigden to pick up their seventh win in a row by an 8-4 score over the Victoria HarbourCats on Friday night at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park,

Voelzke led the charge offensively with a second inning grand slam and had 5 RBI’s while Trent Tinglestad homered in his 3rd straight game as Trevor Brigden went six innings allowing two runs as the Falcons continued their winning ways and improved to 13-9 on the season.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the 2nd inning as Grant Suponchick got the rally going with a two-out single before the bases were loaded for Voelzke, who hit a towering fly ball over the wall in left field for a grand slam to stake the Falcons a 4-0 lead.

It was first pitch swinging for Voelzke for his home run and got something he expected, “I knew he was going to start me out with a fastball,” said the Falcons shortstop, “If I got the pitch which I saw was middle in and I took a swing at it and luckily it went out.”

Trevor Brigden took over from there as the starter for Kelowna went through three innings without allowing a hit before the HarbourCats were able to find a hit. Victoria was able to get on the board in the 5th inning with a two-run homer from Nicky Gibbs to make it a 4-2 game.

Kelowna had a response in the 6th inning as they pushed their lead back to four runs thanks to an RBI single from Matt Land followed by Voelzke’s 5th RBI of the night as he grounded out to bring home Josh Figueroa to get ahead by a 6-2 score.

“He’s one of our team captains and he’s been a rock for us at shortstop,” said Head Coach Bryan Donohue, “Having that stability in a lot of different places and having some many guys that can come up and do a job for us is key.”

Victoria wasn’t going down without a fight as they added a pair of runs in the 7th inning to get within two once again but the Falcons offence would have an answer in the 9th inning and came in the form of a familiar face.

Taylor Wright go on with two outs on a bobbled pop-up from second baseman Adam Imwalle and Trent Tinglestad came to the plate and did what he has been doing for the last three games. Tinglestad swatted a home run the opposite way over the left field fence for his 5th home run of the season and has now homered in each of the last three games.

Cal Hehnke came on in the bottom of the 9th and capped off the Falcons 7th straight win as Brigden earned his second win of the season while Mason Shaw suffered the loss for the HarbourCats.

The Falcons (13-9) and HarbourCats (10-12) play in the second of their three-game series on Saturday night as Kelowna looks to extend the winning streak to eight games. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM on the Falcons Broadcast Network with the Voice of the Falcons, Trevor Miller.
