Close Call

The Kelowna Falcons got six strong innings of pitching from Stone Churby but eventually fell in a tight-contested pitching affair by a 2-1 score to the Corvallis Knights on Wednesday night at Goss Stadium.

Churby was in terrific form on Wednesday, throwing six innings while allowing just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts but was out-duelled on an outstanding effort from Corvallis starter Connor Redmond and a two-run, two-out single from Chandler Anderson was all the offence needed for the Knights.

The opening inning was a good one for the pitchers as Redmond sat the Falcons down in order in the 1st before Churby struck out the side in the frame, stranding a pair of runners on second and third to get out of the first scoreless.

The first run of the game came in the 4th inning as the Falcons cashed in on a lead-off double from Cody Crowder. Lucas Soper came up with two outs and scored Crowder on a line drive double to the wall in left field for the game’s opening run and put Kelowna ahead 1-0.

Churby, who had stranded a runner at third base in two innings previously, got into a bit of trouble in the 5th inning as the Knights’ Beau Phillip was caught in a rundown from 3rd and home on a ground ball but was able to get back to 3rd base on an off-line throw from Jake Fischer, which would prove to be crucial in the inning.

Two batters later, Chandler Anderson sent a two-out, two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded gave the Knights their first lead of the game at 2-1.

Kellan Richards came out of the bullpen and threw two terrific innings of relief for Churby, as he struck out five of the six batters he faced through his two innings out of the bullpen.

Redmond continued his strong start, going 7.2 innings pitched allowing just a single run on four hits and eight strikeouts before handing off to the bullpen in the 8th inning in the way of Connor Knutson, who recorded the final out of the 8th inning.

Knutson got two fly outs to start the 9th inning before Trent Tinglestad singled to give the Falcons a base runner. A walk by Taylor Wright got the tying run to second base but Soper ended the game with a pop out to first base and gave Corvallis a series win and a 2-1 victory.

Redmond picked up the win with his solid outing and Knutson collecting his first save of the season while Churby was saddled with the loss despite his terrific six innings of work.

The Falcons (23-18/9-6) look to salvage the series in the third and final game of the three-game set against the Corvallis Knights (25-16/10-5) for a 6:30 PM first pitch at Goss Stadium. The game will be broadcasted live on the Falcons Broadcast Network with the Voice of the Falcons, Trevor Miller.
