Falcons Sweep Elks

The Kelowna Falcons uses a three-run 2nd inning and a four-run 6th inning to help them to a 7-4 victory over the Bend Elks and a sweep of the three-game series on Friday night at Elks Stadium.

Matt Land, Matt Voelzke and Trent Tinglestad all collected two RBI’s in the game while Jared Akin dealt 5.2 innings as the Falcons earned their fourth sweep of the season and third straight victory.

The Falcons opened the scoring after two solid innings from Akin to begin the game as they sent eight batters to the plate and collected three runs and three hits in the 2nd inning, all coming with two outs.

Matt Land came through with a two-run double to the wall in right field to collect his second and third RBI’s of the series before Voelzke drove him in with an RBI single to push the Falcons lead to 3-0 after two innings of play.

The Elks collected their first hit of the ballgame with two outs in the 4th inning as Colin Runge blasted a ball to left field for a solo home run and got Bend on the board to cut the Falcons lead to 3-1.

Daniel Naughton settled in on the mound after the three-run 2nd inning, setting the Falcons down for three innings before the teams exploded for runs in the 6th inning.

Runge came through with two outs again in the 6th inning as he sent a ball deep to left field for his second homer of the night to get within a run as Reece Weinberg came on in the inning and collected the final out of the 6th inning before the Falcons offence came through in a big way.

Mike Pineiro led off the inning for Kelowna with a single before seven more of his teammates would come to the plate in the inning, and with two outs, Voelzke brought him into score with an RBI single, his second of the game. Trent Tinglestad would plate a pair with an RBI single before another run came in on an error to complete a four-run 6th inning for Kelowna and give them a 7-2 advantage.

Weinberg continued his strong relief outing as he sat down the Elks in order in the 7th inning before handing the ball off to another lefty in Andrew Alvarez, who struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 top of the 8th inning.

Bo Henderson came on in the 9th inning for Kelowna as Bend scored a pair of runs on a balk and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick Roberts to cut the deficit to three runs but it would be too late as the Falcons earned the sweep with a 7-4 victory.

Jared Akin snapped a personal three-game losing streak with the win on Friday while Daniel Naughton was the unfortunate loser in the game despite a strong starting effort for the Elks.

The Falcons (23-16/9-4) have the weekend off before hitting the road to take on the Corvallis Knights (22-15/6-4) in a three-game series at Goss Stadium, beginning on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM.
