Kelowna Falcons

Pruitt Power

The Kelowna Falcons used three hole runs on the night and a five-run 5th inning to help them to a 10-4 victory in the series opener against the Bellingham Bells on Friday night at Joe Martin Field.

Dan Pruitt launched a pair of home runs on the night and three RBI’s while Matt Voelzke blasted a three-run home run as the Falcons offence erupted for a big series victory against the first half North Division winners in the Bells.

The Falcons bats had been silent over the last 15 innings but broke through with two outs in the second frame starting with an Ezra Samperi walk before Dan Pruitt hammered a 1-0 fastball over the wall in left center field for his 3rd homer of the summer and a 2-0 Kelowna lead in the 2nd inning.

Kelowna added two more runs in the 3rd inning, beginning the inning with a double from Matt Voelzke and a single off the bat of Davis Todosichuk led to Trent Tinglestad collecting his 40th RBI of the summer before Todosichuk scored on a throwing error to put Kelowna ahead by a 4-0 score.

The 4th inning is where the Falcons really opened the game up and took advantage of the ballgame. Starter Theron Kay was replaced by Trey Tiffany, who gave up back-to-back walks to lead off the inning before Garret Kelly came through with an RBI single to put the Falcons ahead 5-0.

Matt Voelzke came up with runners at the corners and laced a three-run home run to left field for his 3rd homer of the season followed by an RBI double by Tinglestad to push the Falcons lead to 9-0 after three and a half innings.

The Bells scored twice in the bottom of the 4th to inch closer and make it a 9-2 game as James Brooks continued the battle for the Falcons, getting out of the 5th inning allowing just two runs on three hits and put the Falcons in a very good position.

Reece Weinberg came on in the 6th inning and surrendered a run but settled into a nice groove and closed out the final four innings of the game for Kelowna on the mound.

Pruitt continued his strong night in the 9th inning as he flew a ball deep to right field for an opposite field home run, his second of the game, and gave the Falcons a 10-3 lead before Bellingham added another run in the 9th but it would be Kelowna opening the series with a 10-4 victory.

James Brooks started the game for Kelowna and went five innings allowing just three hits and two runs and got the win before Weinberg cleaned up the rest of the game with four innings allowing two runs on eight hits. Theron Kay suffered the loss, pitching three innings allowing four runs on three hits.
