Recap

The Kelowna Falcons lost a close game 4-3 against the Bellingham Bells. The Falcons rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run on third, but were unable to bring it home to score.

The Bells scored all four of their runs in the second inning. The biggest reason that happened was because the Falcons didn’t play clean defense and ended up committing three errors. Kelowna would break through in the third when a Trent Tinglestad RBI single scored Davis Todosichuk.

Kelowna would strike again for a pair in the ninth, as Alex McGarry would lead off with a double and be brought home on a Cole Mueller RBI single. Matt Voelzke then brought home Mueller with an RBI double to make it 4-3 Bells. The comeback would fall short and the series would be evened up.

Holden Groff, the big righty, made his first start of the season and was fantastic. He went seven complete innings and allowed four hits and four runs, with none of them being earned. He walked one and struck out five along the way.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons head coach, gave his thoughts on the game. He mentioned the start by Groff and said, “He did a great job by not letting that four-spot that we gave up rattle him. He kept pitching and did a good job of keeping them off balance. For him to go seven innings with zero earned runs against that offense was something else. It was a great outing for a kid who hadn’t started before tonight.”

Donohue continued on by saying, “We gave ourselves a chance to win late. It’s just unfortunate to lose a game where we didn’t give up one earned run. We didn’t have the offensive execution early. After that four-spot we really refocused and played a clean game.”

The rubber match of the series goes Sunday night at 6:05 pm. Shea Barry will make his first start of the summer for Kelowna who will look to win their second straight series.
