Recap

The Kelowna Falcons (10-6) soundly defeated the Bellingham Bells (10-6) by a score of 8-1. The Falcons and Bells came into the game the two hottest teams in the West Coast League. The Bells were on a seven-game winning streak, while the Falcons were winners of four in a row.

It was a battle for first place in the WCL’s North Divison and with the Kelowna win, both clubs now share the top spot. The next two games will be pivotal for both teams as they duke it out. The Falcons will now be looking for separation and for the chance to pull away in their division.

The story of the game was the Kelowna batters. They were able to smash 11 hits against the Bells and scored eight runs for the second time in two games and for the fifth time overall this season.

The Falcons were led by Logan Steinberg the first baseman. He had three hits, two RBI and crossed the plate twice. Ian Dawkins, Alex McGarry and Josh Glenn also had multi-hit games to propel the Falcons to their longest winning streak of the season.

Niall Windeler, the Canadian-born lefty, was on the bump and pitched seven innings. He allowed three hits and gave up one earned run while striking out three. He got the win and moved his record to 3-1.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons manager, weighed in on his starting pitchers performance. He said, “He struggled off the hop. We had to track down some well-hit baseballs to prevent a few runs from scoring. Our defense was able to make some big plays and big Windeler up. he got a lot better in the deeper innings and that was huge. He gave us a quality start and the guys played well behind him.”

Donohue was also impressed with the offense, which put up another eight runs. He said, “The scoreboard speaks for itself. We did some good team things. We executed a couple good hit and runs. We have some guys on this team who can steal some bases. I think that when you do things like that, it creates runs and puts players in scoring position. I was really proud of the quality of contact that we had.  To keep scoring the way that way did that’s really what was huge.”

Donohue also had a strong message for his club, which will look to take sole possession of first in tomorrow’s game. “We came in here and had a job to do. We want to win the series. If we can take care of business tomorrow, we achieve that and we’ll just look forward from there. You could tell from the get-go that guys were pumped for this series. First place and second place going up against each other that’s what this is all about. We just played a really complete game tonight and I was proud of our guys.”

The Falcons and Bells will play a pivotal game two of the series Wednesday night at 6:35 pm.
