Recap

The Kelowna Falcons opened their away series against the Victoria HarbourCats with a thrilling 6-5 win in 11 innings. The Falcons were kept off balance by the Cats starter Jack Owen all night. Victoria led by a score of 4-0 heading into the top of the eighth.

Kelowna put some competitive at-bats together and was able to score a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half. The top of the ninth came along and Kelowna completed their rally, scoring three runs and taking a 5-4 lead. With two outs and no runners on in the bottom of the ninth, the Cats were able to tie the game with a solo home run by Shane McGuire. It was his second solo shot of the evening.

The game went into extras, and in the 11th, the Falcons broke through once again and tagged on a pivotal run to put them up 6-5. Shea Barry hit the mound and closed it out with help from Cole Mueller, who ended the game with a perfect double play.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons skipper, gave his thoughts on the rollercoaster game. He first talked about starting pitcher Cal Hehnke saying, “Cal competed hard for us tonight. He never allowed them to put up a crooked number. There was a lot of opportunities where they could have put up a two or three spot against us but he never let it happen.”

He continued on saying, “The thing I’m most impressed with is that after our huge momentum building ninth, they went and tied it up. It’s really easy to just roll over and let that be a loss. But Shea Barry continued to come out and pitch so well. We’ve been on a rollercoaster ride this season. You could see that even when we were down 4-0, these guys were focused. I keep telling the team that we’re an inch away from playing consistent baseball. To earn this one the way that we did, was something special.”

The Falcons and Cats play game number two Wednesday night at 6:35 pm.
