Recap

The Kelowna Falcons lost to the Walla Walla Sweets by a score of 14-11. The loss evened the series at one game apiece and halted the Falcons five game winning streak.

It was a back and forth affair as the teams traded huge sixth innings. Kelowna put up seven runs in the top half of the inning and Walla Walla responded with a nine-spot of their own in the bottom half.

The Falcons were able to tally 11 hits, with Matt Voelzke leading the way with three. Alex McGarry also hit his third home run of the season. It was a towering shot over the scoreboard in right field.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons head coach, gave his thoughts on the contest. He said, “We set the table for them. We walked too many of their guys. We made some bad defensive decisions that ended up costing us. We gave them some free runs, which is where you can’t live with it. 14 runs against doesn’t just happen by mistake.”

Donohue also spun the loss as a learning opportunity. He said, “It’s another game to put in the bank and learn from. We’re happy with the way our offense is clicking and putting up runs. Next time we see a big inning developing against us, we can reach into our back pocket and nip it in the bud. That will be especially valuable in the upcoming playoffs.”

The final regular season game goes tomorrow at 7:05 pm. The Falcons open their first round playoff series on August 8th against either the Wenatchee AppleSox or the Victoria HarbourCats.
