Recap

The Kelowna Falcons (0-3) are winless to start the second half of the season. They fell in the final game of the series to the Victoria HarbourCats (4-0) by a score of 12-2. It was the first time all the season that the Falcons have been swept.

The story of the game was offense. The HarbourCats never scored fewer than two runs in an inning and put up a pair in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth. They also added a four-spot in the seventh to really break the game open.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons head coach, had this to say when asked about his take on the game. “They can hit. I thought we left too many balls elevated over the plate. Their hitters were comfortable with that all series. We needed to do more to create doubt in their batters, which we just didn’t do. They’re an aggressive hitting team. Our pitchers need to learn that even when we don’t have everything going, we can’t be letting hitters get off free and easy swings.”

The Falcons haven’t had much going offensively throughout the series. Donohue addressed this as well. He said, “We were not aggressive enough. I thought tonight we were looking for too good of a pitch, early. Next thing we know, we were hitting at what their pitcher wanted. That’s just us not being ready to hit from the get-go. We need to get more aggressive.”

The players have a meeting at the end of every game. Donohue gave a glimpse of what was said after tonight’s loss. He said, “We need to be more competitive at the plate. To have two of these games with basically zero offense is unacceptable. We can’t be sitting back and letting their pitching dictate how we react. We need to get right after them and make things happen.”

The Falcons will try and break their longest losing streak of the season tomorrow night in Wenatchee. The first pitch goes at 7:05 and Jame Brooks will be on the mound for Kelowna.
