“Grim” Kind of a Night

Tuesday night saw the Falcons collect their largest offensive output of season, blasting the Wenatchee Applesox 17-1 behind 20 hits.

Following the All-Star break the Falcons played their seventh straight road game, but they didn’t seem to mind and now have five wins on this roady.

The offense clicked in their first at bat as they stuck for a four run inning.  Brandon Grimsley (pictured), Nick Minteer and Trey Kamachi all had RBI hits in the inning.  Turns out that would be all the offense starter Jeremy Newton needed, although he got much more than that.

In their next at bat, the Falcons doubled what they did in the first inning scoring eight times on eight hits.  Grimsley recorded his second and third RBIs of the night while Josh Croft, Scotland Church, Jerod Smith, Colton Waltner and Kody Matthews also tallied RBI hits.

In the fifth and eighth innings the Falcons tacked on another pair of runs, and then scored one in the ninth.  Kamachi and Waltner had RBIs in the fifth, while Croft tripled in a run in the eighth inning.  Smith knocked in Matthews in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

Newton records his first win since June 8 by throwing a solid seven innings.  He allowed one run on eight hits and struck out three.

The 20 hits by the Falcons is a season high.  Grimsley finished with four hits and three RBIs, Smith had three hits and a pair of runs batted in, while newcomer Matthews also finished his debut with three hits.

The Falcons and Applesox will play on Wednesday night in game two of their three game series.  Friday night the Falcons are finally back at home to host the Yakima Pippins.
