Falcons – Sox Preview

It’s the beginning of the end for the Falcons as the final home stand of the season starts tonight at Elks Stadium against the Wenatchee Applesox at 6:35pm.

The Falcons will play three against the Sox, then conclude the season against the Walla Walla Sweets this weekend.

This divisional rival between the Falcons and Applesox continues to be one of hottest across the West Coast League.  This season, the clubs have met six times with the Falcons outscoring the Sox 36-34 winning two of the six games 13-4 and 17-1.

The Applesox are mere percentage points out of the lone wildcard position, trailing the Bend Elks by two games with six games to go.  The Sox are 6-4 in their last 10 games and are coming off a series win at home against the Cowlitz Black Bears.

Offensively the Applesox are on the top of the pile with a .289 average and 491 hits.  They’ve scored 277 runs (sixth most) and have the fewest strikeouts (280).  Caleb Wood has the second highest batting average, hitting .360 with 49 hits, six doubles, two homeruns and 17 RBIs.

Wood and the Applesox hitters will be a challenge for the Falcons pitching staff with a 5.65 ERA.  The staff has given up 251 earned runs (third most) and 452 hits (fourth most).  They have struck out 326 hitters, but have walked 241 (second most).   The projected starters in this series are; Jeremy Newton (2-4), Sam Murphy (1-1) and Josh Nuernberg (2-3).

The Falcons hitters have seen success against the Applesox staff in the seasonal series, scoring six runs a game.  As a club the team is hitting .239 this summer.  Conversely the Sox staff has a 4.08 ERA, and lead the league with 421 strikeouts.

Over the next three games, the Falcons have an excellent opportunity to play spoiler and keep their division rival out of the playoffs.  The first pitch each game this series is scheduled for 6:35pm.
