Homerun Hunter

Hunter Villanueva is the West Coast League’s All-Star homerun champion for 2015.

Monday night in Bellingham during the Seventh Annual WCL All-Star Homerun Derby, Villanueva blasted six homers with the wind blowing in at Joe Martin Field.  He edged out Bend’s West Tunnell who clubbed five.

This is the second time a Falcon has won the All-Star Homerun Derby.  Nick Freitas took home the title at the 2008 mid-summer classic in Moses Lake, Washington.

As for the actual All-Star Game itself, the five Falcons were part of the North All-Stars who fell 3-0 to the South. Justin Flores started the game as the DH and finished with a pair of hits including the North’s first hit in the fifth inning, Max Carter came off the bench and was 1-3, while Villanueva and Brandon Oliver were held hitless.

Jayce Bannister pitched a perfect top of the ninth inning for the North and struck out two of the three he faced.

The All-Stars will join the rest of their teammates tonight in Walla Walla when the club opens a three game series with the Sweets.

The Falcons return home for a weekend series with the Bend Elks beginning on Friday.
