Falcons Drop Series

The Kelowna Falcons (6-5) were once again soundly defeated by the Corvallis Knights (6-6) in the rubber match of the series. The Knights took the game by a final score of 10-3. It was the second time in the three games that the Knights had scored double digit runs, the first time being game one, a 12-0 win.

Leif Strom, the losing pitcher, was hit hard for four runs in the third inning. That really took the air of the sails for the Falcons, whose offense and bats was quiet once again.

The Knights forced the squad out of British Columbia, Canada, to reach deep into their bullpen, as Riley Moore, Blake McKinney, Cody Ahlgrimm and Jake Simmons all came in for work.

There were some bright spots for the Falcons however. AJ Sawyer, the right fielder out of UC Riverside, displayed some wonderful defense. He used his cannon of an arm to get the ball all the way to home plate where Jake Druce as waiting with time to spare to tag out the runner. Despite the occasional flashes of good play, the Falcons were frustruated for most of the night. Jake Wong, the starting pitcher for the Knights, was fantastic, making big strikeouts when his team needed them.

After the game was over, Scott Stone, the assistant coach of the Falcons, offered his view on the events that transpired. He said, “It was a tough loss. The ones that are really frustrating are the ones like tonight, when the score is just run up so far.”

The topic of striking out also came up, with Stone saying the team needs to be better with their approach. “There were a lot of strikeouts tonight. The pitcher was good, but we need to be better with our at bats.” The team will attempt to put the series loss behind them as they visit the Gresham GreyWolves for a three game set. The GreyWolves are a new team, and are relatively unknown as of yet.

That won’t change the approach of the Falcons, who need to be aggressive on both sides of the ball in order to have success. Tonight’s loss may have signaled a gut check time for the team. A positive response against the GreyWolves would be a great start, and is the outcome that both the coaching staff and players are hoping for.

Short memory. Those two words are key in baseball. The Falcons would be wise to heed them.
