Knights Clip Falcons

Things didn’t go as planned for the Falcons on Wednesday night. The birds were hoping for a rebound performance after a tough 5-1 loss to the Corvallis Knights on Tuesday, but they got just the opposite. The visitors out of Oregon shut the Falcons’ bats down, keeping the home side off the scoreboard on their way to a decisive 7-0 victory.

The Knights’ pitching completely shut the door; starter Cameron Bishop only gave up 3 hits to the Falcons through his 5 innings pitched. That trend continued in the late innings with the visiting teams’ relievers, they cleaned up the home side’s hitters, allowing just a single hit in the final four frames.

The Falcons’ bats didn’t have much luck getting aboard the bases, save for designated hitter Vaughn Shapen, who had 2 of the birds’ 4 hits and a walk.

Coach Bryan Donohue wasn’t pleased with the intensity of his club on Wednesday. After the game he talked about the Falcons failing to put up a fight. “When the other team isn’t really knocking at the door, ever, it takes all pressure off.”

The Falcon’s pitching carried the offense-challenged team through the first 8 innings. Starter Tanner Knapp went 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs, only one of which was scored as ‘earned’. The relievers were challenged a bit more, but it remained a 2-0 game heading into the top of the 9th. The Knights opened up the floodgates, scoring 5 in the final frame, putting it out of reach for the reeling Falcons.

Despite it being a tight game up until the ninth inning, Donohue thought the Knights were more than comfortable. “That two-run lead probably felt like 8 to them. We weren’t doing anything offensively.” That has been the story the last two games; the home side has only scored 1 run in the first two games of the series.

Game 3 will go tomorrow, with the Falcons hoping to avoid being swept at home. The 6:35 PM start on Thursday will be played in front of a full house for firefighter’s night. All proceeds from the game will be going directly to the BC Burn Fund to help our heroes.
