Knights Trample Falcons

The first game of the Kelowna Falcons (5-4) road trip didn’t go as planned. The Corvallis Knights (5-5) saw to that as they put up double digits in their 12-0 routing of the Falcons.

Jake Simmons, the starting pitcher, threw extremely well. He was one of the only positives on an ugly night for the Falcons squad. The trouble started at the plate, where the boys out of British Columbia couldn’t get any offense going.

They didn’t put up any runs through the nine innings, where as the Knights did nothing but. The game was close, only 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, which is where the Knights really came alive.

It started with the bases being loaded, and what followed brought the Corvallis crowd to its feet. It was a grand slam, part of a five run inning that basically sunk the Falcons right then and there. The Knights would add another couple runs in the sixth and then tack on three more in the eighth.

There was also frustration on the other side of the ball, as the Falcons defense was not nearly up to par on the night. There were fly balls that were dropped, errors were made and runners were simply not thrown out in time. The bullpen pitchers, who came in after Simmons was done, simply weren’t good enough. The whole team was sub-par on the night.

It was a calamity of errors for nine long innings. The Falcons were simply unable to get anything going on offense or defense. It was an extremely frustrating loss for both the players and the coaching staff.

The players all huddled up after the game and were told by Bryan Donohue a couple of things. He told them that they can’t get down like that, especially at the plate. The second thing he said was to have a short memory, because they have two more games against this Knight’s team.

The Falcons will begin the quest to start a new winning streak Wednesday night when they face the Knights in game two. They will have one more game on the Thursday before heading to Gresham to play the Greywolves for a three game set.
