Sox Sweep Falcons

The Kelowna Falcons lost an absolutely heartbreaking game by a score of 7-4 against the Wenatchee AppleSox. The Sox have now swept the Falcons at home and have taken the season series by a 6-0 count.

Kelowna started the game off well with Sam Menagat making his third appearance of the summer. He pitched seven innings of scoreless ball and allowed nine hits and no walks. He also struck out eight along the way.

Bryan Donohue, Falcons head coach, was very happy with his starting pitchers performance. He said, “He competed. He did a good job of keeping some of their better hitters to singles at worst. He’s a competitor. He came out and was focused against a good offensive team.”

Donohue also praised Davis Todosichuk, the Canadian-born outfielder. He said, “Davis made some great plays. He has a good arm and can track balls down. He’s put a lot of work in. He was struggling early but he’s really put some focus and effort into turning things around. I was really proud of him.” It showed, as Todosichuk had a three hit ball game and also picked up a pair of RBI.

The top of the eighth inning is when the Falcons really imploded. Kelowna was up 4-0 at that point and the bullpen took over. Donohue said, “The top of the eighth was unacceptable on all accounts. The arms that we ran out weren’t sharp. They weren’t ready to go. For us to allow that many runs by walks, it is just unacceptable. The biggest thing is that they have to learn from it. We’re going to be in situations like that again. It’s a killer to give up that many runs because we can’t throw strikes.”

The Falcons will now have five days off before their next game. It’s the All-Star break and three Falcons, Taylor Wright, Matt Bottcher and Cal Hehnke will all be participating. The next home game is Saturday, July 22nd when the Bend Elks are in town. First pitch goes at 6:35.
