Cats Win Series

The Kelowna Falcons (0-2) lost the series against the Victoria HarbourCats (3-0) by a score of 10-5 in eleven innings. The Cats have come out hot to start the second half of the season and are angling for that second playoff berth. Kelowna clinched the first on the last day of the first half of the season.

It was a tight game that had the makings of a playoff atmosphere. The Falcons scored once in the first and once in the second to take the early lead. Victoria responded with a single run and then a three-spot in the fourth. Taylor Wright then came up to bat in the fifth and crushed his seventh homer run of the season to give the Falcons the 5-4 lead. Victoria battled again and tied the game in the sixth.

That would be all the runs in the game until the top of the eleventh when the Falcons pitching got in a spot of trouble and gave up five runs. That deficit was too large for the Falcons to make up at the bottom of the frame.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons coach, saw a competitive game from his squad, who happened to come up short. He said, “That was one of the most competitive games we’ve played all summer. We had a couple chances to end it late. Brayden Price had some really great innings. Wright’s three-run home run was fun to see. It’s a shame that either team had to lose the game. We were one swing away from being on the right side of that game. It’s tough to lose it that way.”

Donohue was happy with his team’s effort, especially coming off of the 14-1 loss the previous night. He said, “The call for action after last night was just to come out and compete. It was a good response. To go to extra innings and to have that game shake out the way it did made me proud of the guys. It was a fun game to be a part of and it sucks to lose it. That felt like a playoff baseball game and I think we can learn some things that will help us down the road.”

The final game of the series goes tomorrow at 6:35 pm. Sam Jared Gray will be on the mound for Kelowna who will look to avoid the sweep. First pitch goes at 6:35.
