YAKIMA, WA. – The Kelowna Falcons got timely hitting and some terrific pitching to help them to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Yakima Valley Pippins on Tuesday night at Yakima County Stadium.
Gage Wall threw four scoreless innings for the Falcons before giving way to Nick Nygard out of the bullpen, who tossed five scoreless frames for the victory while single runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings helped Kelowna earn the series tying victory of their three-game set against the Pippins.
Gage Wall got the nod for the Falcons, as he worked his way around a bases loaded, two-out jam in the 1st inning while doing the same in the 2nd frame, working around two men in scoring position to get out of the second scoreless.
Meanwhile, Pippins starter Joey Magrisi was dealing, surrendering a walk to Dan Pruitt but that was all that he let by, striking out four batters through two innings of his start.
The Pippins made some noise once again in the 5th with back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Wall’s night came to end, as he scrapped his way through 4 innings of shutout ball, walking 5 batters and striking out 2.
Nick Nygard came out of the bullpen and was outstanding, striking out a pair and getting out of the threat to keep the game scoreless into the 6th inning, which was the final one for Pippins starter Joey Magrisi.
The right hander tossed six innings of scoreless ball without surrendering a hit and striking out 11 Falcons batters, giving up just one walk and, before being taken out after six innings, had retired 15 straight Falcons before being replaced by Ryan Jameson out of the bullpen.
The Falcons responded well to the pitching change in the 7th and collected their first hit of the game as Tyler Grissom singled back up the middle. After an error allowed a pair of runners to get into scoring position, Tyler Williams was called upon as a pinch hitter and chopped a ball to the left side for his first RBI of the season and a 1-0 Falcons lead in the 7th.
After Nygard was able to get himself out of another sticky situation in the 7th, Kelowna was able to tally another run to take a 2-0 lead in the 8th. Matt Voelzke looped a single into right field for his 5th RBI of the season and a 2-0 advantage for the visitors.
The Falcons would add another run in the 9th inning, taking a 3-0 lead as pinch hitter Tylor Nixon flew a ball to center field for a sacrifice fly that would score a run and give Kelowna a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom the 9th inning.
Nick Nygard continued to deal in the 9th, completing a five-inning relief effort allowing just two hits and no runs over that span to earn the win from the mound and help the Falcons to a 3-0 victory.
