YAKIMA, WA. – The Kelowna Falcons made a valiant effort but a five-run 4th inning was too much to overcome in a 6-4 loss to the Yakima Valley Pippins on Monday night at Yakima County Stadium.
Tyler Williams went 2-for-3 while Austen Butler and Cole Cummings each reached base in a 10-hit effort for the Falcons but a three-run home run off the bat of Tanner Parker in the 4th inning proved to be the difference in a series opening win for the Pippins.
For the second straight game, Kelowna found themselves ahead early in the ballgame in the 2nd frame. Tyler Williams led off the frame with a double to the opposite field in right that allowed Brayden Merritt to drive him in with a sacrifice fly to left field for his 1st RBI of the season and a 1-0 advantage for the visitors.
Kelowna would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning courtesy of a base hit from third year Falcon Matt Voelzke. Austen Butler led the inning off by being hit by a pitch and was scored two batters later on the single by Voelzke that was sliced to right field for his 4th RBI of the season and a 2-0 Falcons advantage.
The bats woke up for the Pippins in the 4th inning as they sent nine batters to the plate and took their first lead of the ballgame. Owen Cobb delivered his team-leading 9th RBI with a two run double to tie the game before Yakima continued to press.
After a pair of runners got on, and with two outs, Tanner Parker extended his multi-hit streak to six games in a big way. Parker lifted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season and the three-run shot gave the Pippins their first lead of the game at 5-2.
Clark would conclude his outing after 5 innings with the five-run 4th inning the only mark on an otherwise strong night. Tyler Wincig came out of the bullpen and dealt two scoreless innings to keep the score tight while right handed Mike Woinarowicz got into a nice groove after surrendering runs in back-to-back innings.
The Falcons would tack on another run in the 7th on Woinarowicz with a little help. Austen Butler sent a ball down the right field line that was bobbled a bit by Greg Fuchs that allowed Grissom to score all the way from first base and got the Falcons with a pair of runs at 5-3.
Yakima Valley added an insurance run in the 8th inning as a sacrifice fly from Luke Schwartz off of Matt Voelzke, who came in to pitch the 8th frame as the Pippins took a 6-3 lead into the 9th inning.
Kelowna did their best to try and come back in the 9th inning, getting the first two men in before Butler brought home Jake Fischer from 3rd base with an RBI single to center field that made the game 6-4 but it would be as close as the Falcons would come and fall in the eventual final.
The Falcons (2-8) look to get back on track and even the series against the Pippins (7-4) on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM with the game being broadcasted on mixlr.com/kelowna_falcons with the Voice of the Falcons, Trevor Miller.
