KELOWNA, BC – The Kelowna Falcons battled back but couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell in the second of their three-game series to the Wenatchee AppleSox by a 6-4 score on Wednesday night at Elks Stadium.
The Falcons would be first to find the scoreboard in the 2nd inning, taking an early lead by bringing seven men to the plate. With runners on first and second base, Blake Tressen softly hit a ball through the infield on the right side and into right field where a throw from Trent Sellers was bobbled at the plate and Jake Fischer came in to score the game’s opening run and give Kelowna a 1-0 lead.
The home side added to their lead two batters later as Richi Sede hit a ball to left center field that dropped in for a double against an outfield playing very shallow. Sede’s 9th RBI of the season extended the Kelowna advantage to 2-0.
The lead was short lived for Kelowna as Wenatchee quickly answered in the 3rd frame, beginning with getting a pair of runners on for Ryan Altenberger, who hit a three-run home run over the wall in right field to push the AppleSox ahead by a 3-2 score after two and a half innings of play.
Wenatchee extended their lead in the 5th inning and came in the way of another home run, this time off the bat of Dalton Harum. A two-run shot to straight away center field gave the visitors a 5-2 lead with their fourth home run of the series.
Zach Jacobs saw his outing come to an end after the home run, pitching 4.1 innings before handing off the ball to Gabe Smith out of the bullpen, who surrendered a sacrifice fly to Kody Darcy as Wenatchee took a 6-2 lead with three runs in the 5th inning.
Kelowna made a pitch to get closer in the game, loading the bases in the bottom half of the frame with one out but a strikeout from Brandon Hupe and a flyout off the bat of Jake Fischer ended the threat and the night for right handed AppleSox starter Ryan Long.
The Falcons made sure to cash in on an opportunity in the 6th inning as they cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs. Tyler Grissom brought Bradley Norton in to score with a sacrifice fly before Sede collected his second RBI of the night with a single up the middle that cut the Wenatchee lead to 6-4 into the later innings.
Gabe Smith was terrific in his performance out of the ‘pen, going 3.2 innings while allowing no runs on a hit with three strikeouts and keeping the AppleSox offence at bay while Brett Gillis struck out the side in the 8th inning, giving Wenatchee their two-run lead into the 9th frame.
Gillis remained in the game for the 9th inning in his third inning pitched of the contest and was able to close things out to earn the save and help the AppleSox to a 6-4 victory.
The Falcons (1-7/11-23) look to salvage the three-game set against the AppleSox (6-2/17-17) on Thursday night at Elks Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM with tickets available for purchase on the Falcons website as well as at the gate ahead of the opening pitch of the ballgame.
