Kelowna Falcons

Extra Extra!!

Sunday afternoon the Kelowna Falcons showed a lot of heart against the top team in the division, outlasting the Bellingham Bells scoring an 11-6 victory in 14 innings.

After giving up three runs to the Bells in the bottom of the first the Falcons pitching staff and defence clamped down on one of the best offences in the West Coast League. The didn’t allow another run until their own offence was able to take the lead in the seventh.

In that inning the Falcons scored four times to take a 4-3 lead. Griffin Palfrey and Damian Stone collected back-to-back doubles to drive in runs before Kam Edwards had a massive two-out base hit to chase home two more runs.

The lead however was short lived as the Bells tied it in the bottom half of that inning and it stayed that way to force extra innings.

In the top of the 13th Jeter Ybarra smashed a two-out single to drive in Palfrey and Luke Solis to give the Falcons the lead again. But the Bells came right back and scored two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to extend the game.

Finally in the 14th, the Falcons put the game out of reach scoring five times capped off by a three-run homer from Shea Thomas (pictured) on an 0-1 count. The blast came two pitches after Jake Steels doubled home Michael Montrezza and Matt Baughn with the bases loaded.

Due to the short pitching staff Edwards threw three innings and recorded the win while Steels pitched the bottom of the 14th and struck out a pair of batters.

In all the Falcons offence collected 16 hits with six players recording multi-hit games. Thomas had three RBIs, while Steels, Edwards and Ybarra each drove in two runs a piece.

The Falcons return to Elks Stadium on Tuesday to welcome the Port Angeles Lefties for a three-game series. Tuesday night is Umpire Appreciation Night with some of the proceeds going to Kid Sport in Kelowna, Wednesday the first 200 fans will receive a free team photo and then Thursday join us at the ballpark for Beach Night in your flipflops and board shorts.
