Jumping into Playoffs
The Kelowna Falcons ended the regular season on a high with an impressive 12-7 victory over the visiting Wenatchee Applesox on Sunday, winning two of the three weekend matchups.
Like in the first two games the Applesox jumped on the board first with a pair of runs off starter Jaxon Byrd. The Falcons cut the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Raphael Smeenk scored on a double steal.
The Sox would add two more in their next at bats against Byrd to extend their lead to three. After that, the big lefty settled down and didn’t allow another run. He finished the game throwing seven innings and struck out three, recording the win.
The offence came alive in the fourth inning and got red hot. They scored three runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth, then single runs in their next two at bats on route to their 31st win of the season. They belted out 14 hits after Saturday night’s 11 hits. Garet Crenshaw was outstanding, blasting a three-run homer in the fourth inning and ended the game with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Jonas Salk (pictured on left) was also a force at the plate as he hit a three-run homer, his third of the season, in the next inning, finishing with two hits and two runs scored. His three RBIs on the night gives him a team lead of 31 for the season.
Winning on Sunday and winning the series spoils the Applesox homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They will now face the Victoria Harbourcats as the third seed in the North Division.
The wins by the Falcons this weekend gives them momentum heading into the opening round and best of three series with the Bellingham Bells which begins on Tuesday in Kelowna. Tickets for Tuesday’s playoff game at Elks Stadium are available online now just click HERE.
The gates on Tuesday open at 5:30pm, with the first pitch set for 6:35pm. Tickets will also be available at the front gate at that time. It’s most likely the only playoff game the Falcons will host this summer, so don’t’ miss out!!
