Oh, Hello Offence!
Maybe all the offense needed was some rain showers!
Sunday night Elks Stadium got the rain, and the offense woke up scoring 14 runs on 13 hits and salvaged a win over the Nanaimo NightOwls 14-8 in the opening weekend of the season. The victory was the first of the summer.
The offence got on the board in the bottom of the first after an RBI single by Matthew Pena, who drove in Nate Gray. Then in the second inning Gray (pictured) knocked in a pair with a two-out single before coming home two pitches later on a Cameron Sewell triple.
In the top of the fifth the NightOwls clawed their way back to score five times with two out to take the lead, but it didn’t last long. In the bottom half the offence came alive and scored five runs to retake the lead, getting RBIs from Trey Duffield, Vincent Gamberdella, Jacob Campagna and a pair off the bat of Eddie Fines.
In the sixth, Pena collected two more RBIs on a two-out double, then scored on a wildpitch.
The NightOwls made it interesting with three in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth before Carson Kimball induced a game ending ground out to secure the win. JJ Luna recorded the win throwing 2.1 innings of shutout baseball.
Monday night the Victoria Harbourcats (2-1) come to town to open a three-game series at Elks Stadium. Tickets are available HERE. Monday night fans can qualify to win a pair of Taylor Swift concert tickets for her sold out show in Vancouver this coming December. The gates open at 5:30pm, first pitch at 6:35pm.
