Tough Series Loss

The Victoria Harbourcats scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to comeback and beat the Falcons 9-5 on Wednesday night to steal the series 2-1.

For the first time this series the Falcons scored in the first inning thanks to a three-run homerun off the bat of Matthew Pena, the first homer of the season.   The blast brought in Nate Gray Jr and Trey Duffield who had each reached base prior to Pena’s at bat.

The lead didn’t last long as the Harbourcats struck for a run in the top of the second, then added three more in the third.

In the fourth the Falcons would tie it when a sacrifice fly from Gray Jr brought home Ryan Degroot (pictured) who had doubled earlier in the inning.  Two innings later the offence tallied another run thanks to an RBI single from Cameron Sewell who brought on Vince Gamberdella.

However, the bullpen couldn’t hold down the ‘Cats who scored five in the eighth to claim the win.  Ben Schroeder was hit with the loss.

Gray Jr. continues to swing the hot bat with another three hits and raised his average to .500.  He also added an RBI and a run scored.  His 11 total hits leads the West Coast League through the first six games of the season.

The Falcons now have a rare extended break and won’t play until Monday when they hit the road for the first time and visit the Edmonton Riverhawks in the middle of the Stanley Cup final.  They return home on Friday June 14th to host the Bellingham Bells.
