Kelowna Falcons

Lefties Take Opener

The Kelowna Falcons came-from-behind in the 7th inning to get the game tied but eventually fell in the series opener to the Port Angeles Lefties on Monday night at Civic Field.

Ron Brown stymied the Falcons offence through his six innings pitched allowing just a hit before a three-run 7th inning for Kelowna but a late sacrifice fly from Dalton Harum gave the Lefties the late lead as the Falcons fell by a 5-4 score in the opening game of a three-game series in Port Angeles.

Port Angeles opened the scoring in the 1st inning on a bit of a strange play as Kyle Schmidt was caught stealing from 1st to 2nd but got caught in a rundown which allowed Justin VanDebrake to score the game’s opening run and take a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Falcons to tie the score at 1-1 with Josh Figueroa grounding a ball to second base and a throwing error by Jason Dicochea allowed Mike Pineiro to score and get the Falcons on the board and tie the game.

The two teams went through a scoreless 3rd inning before the Lefties took their second lead of the game on a pair of two out hits, an RBI double from Matt Christian and an RBI single off the bat of Harum that pushed the Lefties ahead 3-1 after four innings of play.

Matt Boissoneault sent a solo home run to left field to give the Lefties a 4-1 lead in the 5th inning as the Falcons offence was struggling to get going against Ron Brown, who gave up just a single hit in 6 innings of work.

The Falcons brought home three runs in the 7th inning to get the game evened up at 4-4 on the strength of a ball off the bat of Tylor Nixon that brought a pair of runs home on an error before Trent Tinglestad came up as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI single to get the game tied.

The Lefties had an answer, however, as Harum came through with runners on second and third in the 8th inning and sent a fly ball to left field which was deep enough to score the pinch runner Christopher Schasteen and put Port Angeles ahead 5-4.

Tristan Busse stayed on for the Lefties and retired the side in the 9th to picked up the win and help Port Angeles to a 5-4 victory. Wyatt Hummel suffered the loss for the Kelowna as the Falcons (14-11) take on the Lefties (12-15) in the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM with all the action being broadcasted live on mixlr.com/kelowna_falcons.
