Falcons Rally Past Sox

The Kelowna Falcons used a four-run 9th inning, including a go-ahead two-run double from Tylor Nixon to help the Falcons to a 7-5 victory over the Wenatchee AppleSox on Sunday night at Paul Thomas Senior Field.

The AppleSox were the first on the scoreboard as an RBI single from John Sage into right field for a 1-0 lead before the Falcons struck in their half of the 2nd inning and got the game on even terms once again.

Lucas Soper led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and was able to advance to second base on a groundout before Steffen Torgersen stood in and sent a base hit up the middle as Soper came around to score and tie the game a 1-1 with Torgersen collecting his 7th RBI of the season.

Both starters in Trevor Brigden and Grady Miller tossed scoreless innings after that, with Brigden getting out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout, one of his eight on the night as he worked through five innings of two-run ball, with Sage collecting an RBI double in the 5th inning to push Wenatchee to a 2-1 lead.

The game got very interesting in the late innings and began in the 7th inning with Soper reaching on a base hit and Dan Pruitt delivering a two-run blast over the fence in left field for his 1st homerun of the season and gave the Falcons their first lead of the ballgame at 3-2.

Isaac Olson came on in relief of Brigden and did not allow much through his 2.1 innings of work but walked the last batter he saw that gave way to Zac Bygum where the AppleSox started to chip away at the deficit. Alix Garcia leveled a double over the head of Davis Todosichuk in center field to tie the game at 3-3 before an RBI single from Nolan McCafferty put Wenatchee ahead once again. A sacrifice fly from Joey Magro gave the AppleSox a 5-3 lead before Cal Hehnke came on and got the final out of the 8th frame.

The Kelowna rally started in the 9th inning with a Torgersen walk before Thomas Rudinsky was able to reach base on an error and put runners on second and third with one out. Cody Crowder came on to pinch hit for Matt Voelzke and lined a single to right field to plate a run and get the Falcons to within a run at 5-4.

After a Taylor Wright strikeout, Austen Butler stood in and laced a single over the outstretched glove of third basemen Jake Taylor and tied the game at 5-5, which set the stage for Tylor Nixon to bring in the go ahead runs with a ringing double into right center field and gave the Falcons a 7-5 lead.

Hehnke remained on in the 9th inning and finished off the victory for Kelowna, and moves to 2-0 on the season so far. Troy Stainbrook suffered the defeat for the AppleSox as the two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Monday night in the rubber match at 7:05 PM.
