Recap

The Kelowna Falcons defeated the Bellingham Bells by a score of 7-5 to take the series opener. It’s the first of six straight home games for Kelowna, who is now on a two-game winning streak. The Falcons had the lead in the bottom of the second inning but Bellingham stormed back and used the long ball to gives themselves the 4-2 cushion.

That would stand until the sixth inning when the Falcons offense would break through and score a three-spot. Trent Tinglestad would then send a solo home run over the fence to make it 6-4 Falcons in the seventh. Matt Voelzke would double home a run and give Kelowna the 7-4 lead heading into the top of the ninth.

Andrew Alvarez was the story of the game. He came in in relief of James Brooks and pitched four innings and allowed five hits with one earned run. He walked one and struck out four to earn the win, his first of the season.

Bryan Donohue, the Falcons skipper, gave his thoughts on tonight’s contest. He said, “One hundred percent the story of the night was Andrew Alvarez. He came in and pitched against some of their best hitters. He competed hard all night. I had been seeing it coming for a while now. His last couple outings he’s been pitching really well. Him coming in and going the distance to close the game against a lineup of left-handed hitters is what we needed. Great tip of the cap to him.”

Donohue continued by saying, “We also played some really good team baseball. We got some timely hits. Matt Voelzke was great as well. He had three hits and three RBI which turned out to be huge. That’s just hard work and making adjustments. Having a three run lead in the ninth and knowing it’s okay to give up a hit here and there makes things so much easier.”

The Falcons and Bells will play again Saturday night at 6:35 pm. Holden Groff is on the bump making his first start of the season.
