Kelowna Falcons

Tight Loss

The Kelowna Falcons suffered their third straight loss as they returned home from a lengthy road trip with a 7-4 loss to the Wenatchee AppleSox on Monday night at Elks Stadium.

Strong starts from both Stone Churby and Michael Spellacy, including 12 strikeouts from Churby in 6 innings, made it a tight game through six innings before Wenatchee scored four runs in the 7th inning to help them to the victory.

Kelowna got the scoring going in the 2nd inning as Lucas Soper looked like he had hit his first home run of the summer but was ruled a double by the umpires even with the ball clearing the left field fence but bouncing back off an advertisement sign to put two on with one out.

Garret Kelly came up after the Soper double and blooped a ball into shallow center field where Evan Williams was not able to come up with a catch and the RBI single pushed Kelowna ahead by a 1-0 score.

The AppleSox were quick to answer in the 3rd inning as they tallied three runs with two outs, beginning with a walk from Williams. Connor McCord drove him home with an RBI single before a two-run double off the bat of Jacob Prater gave Wenatchee a 3-1 lead after two and a half innings.

The Falcons came back to get within a run in the 4th inning as Soper got his revenge, blasting a ball over the wall in left field for his 1st home run of the season and cut the Wenatchee lead to 3-2.

Stone Churby pitched very well for the Falcons after that 3rd inning, collecting a Falcons season-high with 12 K’s in his 6 innings of work and exited the game in after the 6th with three runs allowed on four hits and his twelve strikeouts.

Michael Spellacy also had a good night rolling for the AppleSox, surrendering two runs through six innings before Wenatchee took hold of the game in the 7th inning as they converted on some defensive miscues from the Falcons.

A pair of walks put two on for the AppleSox before a passed ball allowed a run to score before an error brought home another run to push Wenatchee ahead by a 5-3 score. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly increased the AppleSox advantage to 7-2 into the late innings.

Kelowna chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Taylor Wright collected his 30th RBI of the summer with a single up the middle to drive in a run with two outs to cut the deficit to 7-3 before Matt Voelzke drove in a run in the 8th inning with an RBI single to make it 7-4 Wenatchee.

Wyatt Hummel took the loss for Kelowna, pitching in 0.1 innings, allowing four runs while Spellacy earned the win for the AppleSox with his seven innings of work.

The Falcons (12-14/26-26) continue their final home series of the season against the Wenatchee AppleSox (15-11/26-26) on Tuesday night at Elks Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM with tickets available at the Falcons website or at the door ahead of the ballgame.
