Grant Meylan hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th to give the Kelowna Falcons a 7-6 win over the Klamath Falls Gems Monday at Elks Stadium.
After the Gems jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on starter Nat Hamby, the Falcons responded with 3 of their own in the bottom half.
Kelowna took advantage of 3 walks in the inning, scoring a run with a bases loaded free pass to Joey Crunkilton. Josh Egan then followed that up with a clutch 2-RBI single to left on an 0-2 count.
The Falcons took the lead in the 3rd when Max Carter hit a Sac Fly, but the Gems responded with 2 of their own to take a 5-4 lead.
Jayse Bannister took over for the Falcons in the 5th inning, and worked 4 scoreless frames, striking out 6 to pick up his 3rd victory in relief. His 0.99 ERA is 2nd best in the West Coast league.
Kelowna tied the game up with a Hunter Villanueva single in the 4th which set the stage for Meylan’s heroics.
With Brandon Grimsley on 1st, JJ Muno ripped a double to put runners in scoring position.
Meylan took a 2-0 fastball from Jake Repovich up the middle to score Grimsley. A wild throw over the head of the catcher allowed Muno to score easily as well and give Kelowna a 7-5 lead. (AUDIO OF GAME-WINNING HIT)
Andre Jackson struck out the side in the 9th but a wild throw on a stolen base attempt allowed the Gems to make it a one-run game, but they wouldn’t get any closer, as Jackson picked up his 2nd save.
Egan finished the ballgame with 3 hits on the night, while Villanueva, Muno, and Justin Flores each had 2.
The Falcons continue their series with the Gems on Tuesday night at Elks at 6:35.
