Kelowna Falcons

Falcons Host Pippins

The Kelowna Falcons and Yakima Valley Pippins will meet for the first time this season when the Pippins invade Elks Stadium for a three-game series.

The Falcons have started off the year by going 6-6 and currently sit third in the North Division. There’s a lot of parity in the North this season, and even though the Falcons have a .500 record, they only sit a game back of the lead, which is currently held by the Bellingham Bells.

The Falcons recently came off a complete game shutout victory over the Cowlitz Black Bears. Kelowna lost the first two games of the series before coming back and taking a clean victory in the finale.

The Falcons are led offensively by Taylor Wright, a Canadian-born shortstop. He’s currently batting .333 and has nine runs, 15 hits, two home runs and has collected eight RBI.

Among the other offensive leaders for Kelowna, Matt Voelzke, the third baseman, has accumulated nine hits while Chris Arpan and Jake Malone have both contributed eight each.

The Falcons as a team have also been great with extra base hits and have corked 23 doubles and two triples so far this season. The Falcons are led in RBI by the aforementioned Wright with eight but have Arpan and Logan Steinberg close behind with seven and six respectively. Steinberg is also one of two Falcons to hit a home run this season.

The Pippins come into the ball game sitting third in their division with a record of 5-6. They are led on the offensive side by Michael Wyatt who has 11 hits, Dillion Plew and Mitch Ellis who have 13 each and by Steven Sordahl who has 14.

The Falcons will have a bunch of new faces in the lineup and will be joined by a bevy of players whose school years have ended. Kelowna picks up three from Sacramento State, outfielder Ian Dawkins, catcher Raul Ortiz and right-handed pitcher Ryan Smith.

Also joining the team throughout the weekend are infielder Matt Bottcher and pitchers Kade Mechals and Sam Menegat. The Falcons are also waiting for two pitchers and an infielder from UC Santa Barbara and a utility player from UC Riverside.

Kelowna will be looking to keep their one-game winning streak alive when the two team’s meet. First pitch is slated for Saturday at 6:35 pm.
